SNEAK THIEF STABS GRANDMOTHER AND STEALS 40,000 BAHT’S WORTH OF MOBILE PHONES

A hooded man sneaked through the 3rd Floor window of a 4 storey shop house, just past midnight, tied up a 73-year-old grandmother, and viciously assaulted and stabbed her more than 10 times, early this morning. The criminal escaped with his plunder of 7 mobile phones, worth approximately 40,000 Baht.

On 18 July, at 00.30 am, Pol.Lt. Naruphol Garuna and his police team from Banglamung Police, responding to an emergency call, rushed to “Gok 2 Shop”, a second-hand mobile phone dealership, located at 24/52, Moo 5, Soi Nernplabwan, Pattaya City, to find signs of a struggle, blood stains near the staircase and a black nylon rope.
The owner, Mrs. Ame-Orn Sirarom (73), had apparently been subjected to a vicious attack by an unknown assailant, who had entered the building by the 3rd Floor window. He had evidently surprised the old lady, beaten her up when she attempted to resist, tied the rope round her and then stabbed her 10 times in a frenzied attack. He had then stolen 7 mostly expensive, second-hand mobile phones, such as Nokia N70, 7610, and 6681, worth about 40,000 Baht and subsequently escaped via the roof.

Mrs. Ame-Orn’s daughter, Miss Orathai Sirarom (31), told police that she normally closed the shop at 8 pm and went with her husband and son to take care of another shop near Excite Pub, Central Pattaya, leaving her mother home alone until they returned, early the next day. The first she knew of the incident was when she received a frantic phone call from her brother to the effect that their mother had been assaulted by a hooded assailant and robbed.

The concerned siblings rushed back to the shop to find their mother in a dreadful state: bound, covered in blood and exhausted. They immediately took her to hospital.

Police are working under the assumption that the assailant was known to the family and had cased the property well beforehand and was aware of the movements of the various family members. The external CCTV camera was found to have been shrouded to prevent detection.

Police suspect that the criminal could well be a teenager who rents a room in the next building. However, the police also found another suspicious-looking individual sleeping rough in a garage behind the shop, while searching the rented rooms nearby. The man claimed to be meditating and maintained he was well known to the shop-owner. However, the police took him away for further investigation. They also circulated a report on the incident among second-hand mobile phone dealers in the neighbourhood and advised them to be vigilant and report any suspicious incidents to the police.

The police, who have the rope and fingerprints of the assailant as evidence, are following up the case.
