On 25th October at 1.30 p.m. Pattaya police investigator Pol. Lt. Col. Poomipat Nampootha was notified that a Thai woman, Miss. Wanpen Juntham (37) from Surin, had her gold chain snatched by a thief outside the Xyte pub on Pattaya Third Road. Pol. Lt. Col. Poomipat contacted his associates by radio to trap the suspect by covering all possible exits from the area.

Later police spotted a possible suspect speeding down Soi Buakow, Pattaya Klang, on a grey Honda Wave with no licence plate. Miss Wanpen was already in pursuit and eventually caught up with him and kicked over his motorbike. When the suspect tried to run away Miss Wanpen cried out for help and passers-by and local residents detained the thief who consequently beat him unconscious.

Police eventually identified the suspect as Mr. Teerapong or “YO soi-17″ (22) residing at 372/4 Moo. 10 Nongprue, Banglamung. He is a known felon with a long police record and was released from prison two months ago. Police found a one baht gold chain in his pocket which belonged to the victim.

Miss Wanpen explained to police that she had been riding her motorbike with her foreign boyfriend. They had been to Tukcom and were riding along Pattaya Third Road when the thief rode alongside and snatched her gold chain and sped off towards Soi Buakow, at which point she called the police.

When the PDN reporter at the scene interviewed witnesses and bystanders most of them commented they were suffering from the economic and the political situation. They all wake up each morning hoping for a better day and when something like this robbery happens everyone becomes aggressive and shows their frustration even more than usual. They also mentioned an incident the other day when a man was seriously injured after trying to snatch a woman’s purse.

The woman’s boyfriend caught him in the act and slashed his throat. The woman and boyfriend fled the scene on their motorbike but nobody tried to stop them or call the police because they thought the thief got what he deserved. They just left him there crying until the police and rescue team arrived.
