New Zealand, 18th September 2010: Forty three year old Mark William Rainbow pleaded guilty to 38 counts of the Medicine Act 1981 which included possession of anabolic steroids used to boost performance, enhancement of image and sale of unapproved medicines.

Rainbow was sentenced in Auckland District Court to 5 years for misuse of the drug and 3 months for illegally importing, possessing and supplying with both sentences to run concurrently. He had marked the drugs as ‘Gay Lube oil’, giving custom officers the slip, later relabeling it with the name of Rainbow’s trading company, SSIS Pharmaceuticals and sold on to customers.

The quality of drugs sold by Rainbow was not of pharmaceutical standard and posed a risk to users who had not been medically assessed with side effects such as renal failure, heart failure, hypertension, liver toxicity, tumours of the liver and psychiatric disturbances such as depression, aggression and hypomania (a mild manic state). He gave no consideration to the safety and suitability of the drugs or of the risks they imposed.

Mark Rainbow competed in the IFBB and managed a gym Les Mills North East and was the first bodybuilder from New Zealand to turn professional, competing in the US in the 90’s. He won the title of Mr. New Zealand twice and Mr. Australia once.

Mr. Derek Fitzgerald, manager of Medsafe’s Compliance Management branch said, “The outcome of this prosecution should serve as a warning that offences of this nature that posed a high risk to other will be dealt with to the full extent of the law.”
