PATTAYA – April 3, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; At 4:30 a.m., a report of people being killed and injured from a pickup truck overturning was received by the radio center of the rescue unit of Sawangboribultharmmasatharn Pattaya, which dispatched the rescue officers team, equipment car and the medical doctor team.

The incident occurred on the motorway road route 7 part 5, entrance side to Pattaya, under Nong Preu bridge, Moo 1 Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province.

At the scene, rescuers found the severely damaged vehicle lying on the side of the road. It was a black Nissan Navara pickup truck. Mr. Somkid Ontana, age 42, the driver, was not injured.

The bodies of two people killed in the accident were lying beside the pickup truck. One of them was the wife of the driver, Mrs. Booppha Ontana, age 42. Her skull had been fractured. The other victim was Mr. Thongsuk Yodphrai, age 52, who had a broken right arm.

The 6 injured people included the driver’s youngest son, boy Anucha Ontana, age 11, who had severe injuries; his oldest son; Mr. Anusorn Ontana, age 21; and Mrs. Saiphon Thao-ngern, age 30, and her 4-year-old daughter, who were slightly injured.

From another family, Mr. Dechnarong Yodphrai, age 16, was severely injured; and Mrs. Buathong Yodphrai, age 48, was slightly injured. The rescue officers and the nurses assisted to do the first aid and hurried to send the injured to Banglamung hospital.

Officers questioned the driver, Mr. Somkid, whose family operates a laundry shop in south Pattaya. Also riding on the truck were their relatives from the Yodphrai family, who sell papaya salad in south Pattaya.

Mr. Somkid said that on April 1, the two families were traveling in the pickup truck to Kamphaengpech province to visit their relatives in their hometown, and to see if his oldest son, Mr. Anusorn, would be conscripted into military service.

After his oldest son picked up the “black sheet,” which meant he was not chosen to be conscripted, the families then returned to Pattaya. On the return trip, 5 people sat inside the pickup truck and 3 people sat in the truck bed. Mr. Somkid drove the pickup truck, but he became drowsy and fell asleep at the wheel when the pickup was on road route 7 part 5.

He woke up with a shock and saw a car driving across his path from under the bridge. He got startled and jammed on the brakes, causing the pickup truck to spin around and lose control, and it fell down in the grass forest on the side of the road. He barely survived, but the others were killed and injured.
