PATTAYA – August 5, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; At 2:30 a.m., a woman reported seeing a man who stole her purse to Pol. Maj. Seksan Reuvate, Inspector, Pattaya police station; and Pol. Capt. Netithorn Rattanasuchanan, Deputy Inspector.

The theft victim, Ms. Nonglak Sanejak, 20, address 47/116 Moo 10 Tambon Nong Preu, Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province, said that on July 30 a man whom she had just met had driven away with her purse while they were shopping.

She informed the police officers that she just saw the thief drinking with a woman at a Walking Street beer bar at 15 Moo 10 Tambon Nong Preu, Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province.

The officers rushed to the scene with a police team and arrested the suspect. He was identified as Mr. Leon Rico, 23, a Singaporean. Police searched his body and seized 74,500 THB found in his pants pocket.

Ms. Nonglak told police that on the day of the theft, Mr. Leon had approached her to talk and flirt. He claimed he was a Japanese businessman with many businesses in Japan. He also showed her a lot of money to prove he really was a businessman. The money he showed her was the money later seized by police.

Mr. Leon then invited Ms. Nonglak to a leisurely drive to see the scenery. He took her to eat at Daeng-Dam restaurant in central Pattaya. After they finished eating, Mr. Leon stopped at a Family Mart on Tappraya road, where he let her get out of the car to buy some items.

Ms. Nonglak felt enough trust in him to leave her handbag in the car that contained 7,000 THB, her iPhone 4S, an identity card and makeup accessories. But when she got out of the car, Mr. Leon suddenly drove away.

After the theft, she notified the police. Ms. Nonglak later spotted Mr. Leon drinking liquor with the woman in the Walking Street beer bar. She assumed that the woman was his next intended victim, so she immediately called the police.

During questioning, Mr. Leon confessed to stealing Ms. Nonglak’s purse. But he claimed that that 75,000 THB the police found was his own money that his relatives had transferred to him from abroad.

The police didn’t believe him so they seized all of the money to further investigate his claims. They restrained the defendant and sent him and his victim to the investigation officer of the Pattaya police station to investigate and prosecute according to the law.

Police said Mr. Leon may also be responsible for two or three similar reports of thefts by other victims. They will contact the victims to come to the station to check if Mr. Leon is the guilty culprit.
