Singaporean Attempts Suicide in Bt3.5m Thai Ecstasy Bust

A Singaporean national arrested smuggling more than 4,000-ecstasy pills and other narcotics across the Thai-Malaysian border on Tuesday reportedly later attempted suicide, according to customs officials.

Thailand, the 14th of September 2010: Arrested smuggling narcotics at a Thai-Malay border checkpoint in Sadao district, Songkhla, the offender was taken back to the Sadao Customs Offices were he is reported to have later attempted suicide.

Customs arrested Singaporean national, Ang Beng Bee [46], after a random inspection of the vehicle he was travelling in uncovered him in possession of approximately 4,384 ecstasy pills, one gram of crystal methamphetamine and five Erimin 5 tablets (nimetazepam). The estimated street value of the narcotics equates to over Bt3.5 million.

At the time of his arrest Ang, a fluent speaker of Thai, is alleged to have gone berserk and resisted officers attempts to detain him, while later officers reported that he attempted suicide by slashing his wrists and throat with a razor. It is unknown how Ang came into possession of the weapon although speculation is that he had concealed it on his person for drug use purposes.

Travelling from the Malaysian state of Johor Bahru, Ang reportedly confessed that he had purchased the drugs with the intention of on selling them to tourists in the Thai cities of Sadao and Hat Yai, popular with Singaporean and Malaysian tourists.

At present, Ang has been admitted, under police guard, to the Sadao Hospital where he is said to be receiving treatment for his severe injuries. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Ang was under the influence of narcotics at the time of his arrest.
