Pattaya, the 5th of January 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 5:00am on Tuesday, police Lieutenant Watcharapat Khamsuk received a report that shots had been fired into various houses in Soi Mab Yailia, Pattaya. A team of police along with police Colonel Somnuk Changate and Lieutenant Colonel Suphachat Piammanat went to the scene to investigate.

Officers arrived at the scene – a two storey house surrounded by a fence – to find over 10 bullet casings lying several meters from the front fence of the property. An Isuzu pickup parked out the front of the residence had been severely damaged by gun fire and a prize “fighting cock” had been killed nearby. The neighbouring residence had also received several shots to the side and rear of the property.

The owner of the targeted property and pickup, Mr. Prakai Lorphet [45] from Banglamung, (security volunteer) and his wife Mrs. Nopphawan Buajarern stated that the family had been sleeping inside the house when awoken by the incident. Mr Lorphet stated that after the gunfire had ceased he had gone outside to discover that his pickup had been targeted and the front and rear windscreens had been damaged. After investigating the other damages he explained that he proceeded back inside where he contacted the police.

After interrogating Mrs. Buajarern she revealed that she had recently taken out a 20,000 baht loan from an illegal money lender at 60% interest charged daily. She explained that she had been unable to afford the interest repayments and asked the providers for more time to repay, but they had denied. Mrs. Buajarern believes it was these illegal money lenders who had shot at and damaged their property as a result of the unpaid debt.

Investigations will continue into the drive-by shooting in an attempt to apprehend these armed and violent criminals.
