Samak: Thaksin’s CD Speech Not Against Election Law

BANGKOK, Dec 9 -- Leader of the People Power Party (PPP) Samak Sundaravej said today remarks by ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra featured on a CD distributed in northeastern Thailand did not constitute an offense provided by the election law.

Mr. Samak cited the fact the CD had been taped before the enactment of the royal decree on the general election.

Accompanied by his party’s election candidates who were about to leave for campaigns nationwide for the December 23 general election, Mr. Samak said he had earlier held talks with the election commissioners on the controversial CD.

He said some people had tried to link the issue with the PPP while some media had presented the news in such a way the party would be dissolved, adding the Election Commission (EC) was now considering the issue and he believed the EC would be fair in making its decision.

The EC was scheduled on Tuesday to investigate the campaign speech by Mr. Thaksin featured on the CD, in which he solicited support for the PPP, considered a nominee party of the now disbanded Thai Rak Thai Party which Mr. Thaksin founded.

On Saturday, EC chief Apichart Sukhagganond said he was against the release of the CD, which was played on some radio stations, because the speech contained within was tantamount to agitating the public.

Press reports have said some five million copies of the CD were believed to have been distributed in northeastern provinces.

Mr. Samak also expressed concern on advance voting, noting more than two million eligible voters had applied for this, scheduled to be held on December 15 and 16.

He said the number this time exceeded the number who had applied for advance voting in the previous election by around 10 times and the EC should investigate because election malpractice could take place.
