Russians Vow Dire Vengeance For Metro Bombings

As the Russian president adopts a mixed response to the perpetrators of the Moscow Metro bombings, threatening to destroy the insurgents, while simultaneously urging the improvement of living conditions in the North Caucasus to dissuade disgruntled elements from extremism, it is emerging that the two “Black Widows” may only be the tip of the iceberg, at least another 19 specially trained suicide bombers being suspected.

March 31, 2010, [Pattaya Daily News]: the “Black Widow” underground bombers, it is speculated, were motivated by the recent death of Said Buryatsky, intent on revenge for the loss of the key leader of the North Caucasus Islamist rebels, who was killed this month in Ingushetia. However, of most concern is that the female terrorists were only two of a 30-strong suicide squad. Also of concern is the fact that this form of violence is the trademark of jihadists, as suicide bombings are contrary to Caucasian tradition according to Galina Yemelianova, a lecturer in Russian and East European Studies at the UK’s  Birmingham University.

The official responses to the bombings, the death toll from which has now reached 39, many of them students, were typically draconian, with calls to destroy those responsible from President Medvedev, dragging them “from the bottom of the sewers” from PM Vladimir Putin, to poisoning them like rats from Ramzan Kadyrov, Chechnya’s President.

In contrast, dozens of visitors to pro-al-Qaeda websites praised the attacks in Moscow and also Doku Umarov, veteran of Chechnya’s separatist wars with Russia in the 1990s, who last month declared “Blood will no longer be limited to our cities and towns, ” vowing to take the battle to Russia itself, further stating “We try to avoid civilian targets but for me there are no civilians in Russia. Why? Because a genocide of our people is being carried out with their consent.” Kommersant newspaper reported that the Federal Security Service believed nine of the thirty bombers trained by Buryatsky had blown themselves up, but the remainder are unaccounted for, raising deep concerns that more were in Moscow, preparing for a reign of terror.

Meanwhile, two police officers have died in two explosions in Kizlyar in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan.
