PATTAYA – January 3, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]: At 8 a.m., more than 50 uniformed and plainclothes police officers watched as a crime re-enactment was done by the suspects in the rape and robbery of two Russian tourists on Christmas morning.

The Russian victims had been kidnapped while walking on Pratumnak Hill and taken to a deserted area and assaulted. One Russian victim, age 31, is a doctor in a Moscow hospital. The other victim, age 32, is an office worker for a well-known Russian company.

The arrested suspects were identified as Mr.Wichian Jaija, or Bangfee, 35 years old; Mr. Thongchai Jandee, or Koh, 20 years old; and Mr. Anuwat Wat-orn, 32 years old.

The re-enactment was conducted in two separate locations: where the victims were assaulted, and also where they were first abducted. The suspects were first taken to where they raped the girls, at an unused sentry guard house near the Charknork reservoir in Huay Yai.

Police had to restrain the pressing crowd of reporters and curious local residents. Police were afraid that some onlookers would attempt to assault the suspects. A reporter observed that the three Thai suspects looked stressed.

Mr. Wichian and Mr. Thongchai were then ordered by police to re-enact what happened after they brought the two Russians victims to the location.

The suspects showed how they made the victims get out of the pickup truck. One woman taken to the deserted sentry box and raped, while her companion was taken to a grassy area and raped. Meanwhile, Mr. Anuwat acted as a lookout to watch if anyone was coming.

After the suspects were finished, police took them to do the re-enactment of the abduction, which occurred on soi 2, off Phratamnak Road on Phratamnak hill.

The suspects showed police how they had pointed a gun and flashed a knife at the victims, and forced them to get in their pick-up truck. The complete re-enactment lasted about 2 hours.

During initial questioning, Mr. Anuwat Wat-orn told police that he was a jet ski rider at Pattaya beach. He said that in the evening of December 24, Mr. Wichian and Mr. Thongchai rode the pick-up truck to his house on soi 5 on Tepprasit Road in south Pattaya.

The men had some meth, and invited him to go out with them in Pattaya that evening. Later in the early morning hours, the men saw the Russian ladies walking on soi 2, Phratamnak road in the darkness, so they decided to rob them.

But Mr.Wichian pointed out that they should rape them. However, Mr. Anuwat did not agree and tried to protest, because he was afraid that raping the tourists would be big news and attract a lot of attention.

But Mr. Wichian did not listen, and took the girls to rape. Mr. Thongchai also reportedly took part in the rapes. Mr. Anuwat maintained that he did not rape the women, but had acted as the lookout.

A description of how the police tracked down the suspects was presented by Pol. Maj.Gen. Katcha Thatusart. During the initial investigation, police officers had questioned several witnesses, and checked the CCTVs along the route used by the suspects.

Through the CCTVs, police were able to get a photo of the pickup truck. Intensive questioning of various shady characters in the Huay Yai area led police to the owner of the pickup truck, and to Mr. Wichian.

The police detective team then seized the truck, and later arrested Mr. Wichian, Mr. Thongchai, and Mr. Anuwat. The suspects are also charged for drug possession as well as the robbery and rapes, after they confessed to the crime.

Important evidence that can link them to the crime is the DNA that was collected from the clothes and in the vaginas of the victims, the police commander said.

A background check of Mr. Wichian also revealed that he had been served a warrant issued by Kampangpetch provincial court on a charge of attempted murder.

Evidence seized from the suspects after their arrests included a pistol with three number 12 bullets, a knife, a cell phone, a bag with 1,320 baht cash and 7 Singapore dollars, a brass necklace, a lock and 51 keys, and the vehicle used in the crime, a Blue Toyota Mighty X pick-up truck, registration code Bor Thor 7200, Chonburi.

After the arrests of the suspects, grateful representatives of the Russian consul presented a gift to the Pattaya police. A flower bouquet was presented to Pol. Maj. Gen. Katcha Thatusart, commander of Chonburi police station, and the police officers and officials involved in the case.

The bouquet was presented by Mrs. Panga Wattanakul, The Russian Federation to Chonburi; along with Mr. Victor Krivensov, the vice Honorary Consul.

Also involved in the arrest of the suspects were Pol. Maj. Gen.Katcha Thatusart, commander of Chonburi provincial police, Pol. Col. Suphathee Boonkrong, vice commander, Pol. Col. Kampol Leelapraphaporn, director of Huay Yai, Banglamoong ; and Pol.Col. Suwan Chaionawinthawatch, director of Muang Pattaya police station.
