Russian Plane Crash

A horrific plane crash kills at least 140, and many more are severely injuried. A Russian passenger plane skidded off a rain-soaked Siberian runway early yesterday. The plane veered off the runway upon landing and tore through a two-meter high concrete barrier. It then crashed into a compound of one-story garages, stopping a short distance from some small houses at about 7.50am.

A failure in the hydraulic brakes system caused the jet to crash after landing at Irkutsk in Siberia yesterday.

“The information that we have shows that after landing, the plane put on the reverse thrusters and there was a failure in the braking system that led to other mechanisms in the system to break down,” a member of the investigation into the causes of the crash said.

Almost 140 people are feared dead in the crash.

The Airbus A-310 was carrying about 201 people on a flight from Moscow to Irkutsk. An airline spokesperson, Konstantin Koshman, said there were 193 passengers – including 14 children under the age of 12 – and a crew of eight aboard. Many of the children were headed to nearby Lake Baikal on vacation, although Koshman said he did not have further details on that.

Emergency Ministry spokesperson Natalia Lukash said three people whose names were not on the passenger list were pulled unconscious from the wreckage; it was not clear if they were already on the ground or if they were flying as unregistered passengers.

A witness said he heard an explosion and the ground trembled.

“I saw smoke coming from the aircraft. People were already walking out who were charred, injured, and burnt,” Mikhail Yegeryov told NTV television. “I asked a person who was on the Airbus what had happened, he said the plane had landed on the tarmac but didn’t brake. The cabin then burst into flames.”

It took firefighters more than two hours to put out the fire, Emergency Situations Ministry spokesperson Irina Andrianova said.

Officials said the reason for the crash would become clearer once the black box flight recorders had been examined and tests were carried out on the remnants of the plane.
