Russian Male Drinks Vodka then Drowns whilst Swimming in the Sea

Russian Male age 41, with his wife also Russian, flew to Thailand and booked a tour with 11 other Russian Tourists. The tour was to view coral rock at Koh Lin-Koh Kram, Sattahip Bay. The Russian male consumed Vodka before trying to swim to Koh Lin and after getting tired, he got in to difficulty and drowned.

SATTAHIP – April 10, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; At 12.30 p.m. on 10 April 2012, Pol. Capt. Theetat Taroonjan, Investigating Officer, Sattahip Police Station, Chonburi Province was notified that a Foreign National had drowned in the sea between Koh Lin and Koh Kram Sattahip Bay, initially the deceased relatives assisted to bring the corpse back to the beach at Ocean Marina Port, Moo 9, Tambon Na Jomtien, Amphur Sattahip, Chonburi Province. Pol. Capt. Theetat Taroonjan rushed to the scene to conduct an investigation with the rescue officer Sawangrojjanathammasathan Sattahip Foundation.

At the scene he observed that the rescue officer was bringing the corpse into a speed boat named Gilga that was ridden by Mr. Aharon Votovoy, the owner of travelling boat Russian Adventures. The name of the deceased was Mr. Dmitry Klimchenko age 41, of Russian Nationality, who was dressed in a white T-shirt, also wearing swimming shorts, the corpse had a dark green face, and water was leaking out of his nostrils, there was no evidence of foul play or murder.

Mrs. Svetlana Klimchenko age 37, of Russian Nationality, stated that she was the wife of the deceased. She informed Pol. Capt. Theetat Taroonjan that she had flown from Russia with her husband to travel to Thailand on 31 March 2012, and planned to return to Russia on 13 April 2012. They had rented a room Pattaya before the incident occurred. In the morning she and her husband with 11 Russian friends had sat in the boat of Sayama Travel Company, which is the diving tour from Pattaya Port and dropped anchor between Koh Lin and Koh Kram for the tourists to swim and dive to see the coral rocks under the sea. Her husband drank Vodka before going swimming and told her that he will swim to Koh Lin which was far away, approximately 500 metres, but he got in to difficulty and he drowned on the way to Koh Lin. She and her friends swam to assist him and managed to get him to the beach, where they carried out cardiac massage, but despite their best efforts, he died.

Pol. Capt. Theetat Taroonjan, investigating officer, stated that the cause of the death was as of yet undetermined, initial conclusions are that he drowned due to consuming Vodka until he was intoxicated and that the deceased may have suffered from congenital heart disease. The police have sent the body for an autopsy to confirm the exact cause of death and are coordinating with the Russian Embassy in Thailand.
