Pattaya police investigator, Police Lieutenant Jumrus Tongjinda, received notification of the incident at 2:00 pm and dispatched a team to the Kasikorn Bank at Lotus supermarket on South Pattaya Road.

At the scene, police found the bank staff holding Mr. Viktorov Evgeny, [28] and his wife, together with the evidence comprising eighty 20 pound bank notes [worth about 80,000 baht].

The bank staff told the police that the Russian couple had requested to change all the pound notes into Thai baht. A quick check revealed the notes to be forgeries. When the bank staff informed the couple, the suspects became angry and started shouting, at which point the police were called.

Initially, the Russian couple denied they knew the money was fake and said they had received the bank notes from Russian friends. They also said they had another 16 bank notes at their house at 28/207 Moo. Baan Suan Suwattana, in Soi Nernpluwan.

Police searched the house and found thirteen more 20 pound bank notes. At this point the suspects changed their story and said they had found the money in a wardrobe when they moved into the house.

However, the police found their story unconvincing and took them to the police station for further questioning.
