Rowdy Songkran Revelers Rough Up Shop Owner

A Cambodian construction worker used a hoe to repeatedly hit the head of Sattahip shop owner, severely injuring him. The suspect was with other drunk young men throwing water and harassing females. They beat the victim after he told them to move away from his shop.

SATTAHIP – April 17, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 4 p.m., a report of a man beaten by being hit with a hoe until he got severely injured was received by Pol. Capt. Rewat Thongprakorb, the assistant head of the special operation unit of Sattahip police station. He rushed to inspect the scene with the rescue officers of Sawangrojjanatharmmasatharn Sattahip foundation.

The incident occurred at the house address 25/154 Moo 3 Tambon Sattahip, Amphur Sattahip, Chonburi province.

At the scene, officers found the victim, Mr. Sombat O-chan, age 57, the owner of the shop that repairs motorbikes. He got severely injured from being hit by the hoe at his head and face, causing serious bruises and swelling, and he was bleeding from his nose all the time.

The officers found the hoe that was used to make trouble, which was dropped on the ground, so the officers kept it for evidence. Initially, the rescue officers assisted to do the first aid for the victim, then sent him to an emergency room of Queen Sirikit hospital.

Police questioned Mr. Jaru Leangton, the village head of Sattahip Moo 7. He said that before incident occurred, there was a group of many young men sitting to drink liquor and splashing water. They also molested the women that drove motorbikes past them, by locking their necks with their arms and applying powder on their faces.

But Mr. Sombat was afraid that there would be quarreling, so he expelled the group of males, and told them to splash water at another place. This caused them to get angry, so they drove their motorbikes around for several times, then dragged Mr. Sombat to punch and beat him, and used the hoe to hit his face and head until he got severely injured. After making trouble, they drove away on their motorbikes to escape.

Pol. Capt. Rewat Thongprakorb revealed that the traces of evidence in this case, along with the testimony of the witnesses of the incident, allowed the police to identify the main troublemaker, named Mr. Wad, age 29, nationality Cambodian, living in the camp of the construction workers in the nearby area.

Initially, the police brought forces of the police team to follow up to arrest Mr. Wad to prosecute further according to the law.
