France, the 31st of May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Federer, who had teamed up with compatriot Wawrinka to win gold in the tennis doubles at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, mastered the windy conditions to take a straight sets win 6-3, 7-6, 6-2.

The win puts the current world number one men’s player into the French Open quarter-finals having not dropped a single set. Wawrinka briefly looked like upsetting the reigning champion’s copybook until Federer predictably hit back taking the second set in a tie-break.

Federer will now face off against Robin Soderling, the man he beat to claim last years final, after the Swede thoroughly smashed Croatian Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Soderling, the only player to hand world number two Rafael Nadal a defeat at the French Open, perfectly read the 10th seeded Croats serve breaking it no less than 7 times in an entertaining match.

Frances last hope of a home champion ended last night as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga retired through injury in his match against 11th seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny. The match ended with Youzhny winning the first set 6-2.

The former Australian Open finalist was the only Frenchman left in the draw at Roland Garros, which hasn’t seen a French Champion since Yannick Noah in 1983.

Brit, Andy Murray, suffered an inexplicable straight sets loss to resurgent German Tomas Berdych in fading light on the Suzanne Lenglen court. In what was a rain interrupted match, Murry succumbed to the still improving Berdych 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.

Tomas Berdych will now play Mikhail Youzhny in only his second appearance at a grand slam quarter-finals. Murray briefly complained about the state of the balls and the fading light before being thoroughly outclassed by a man who is, like Federer, yet to drop a set at this year’s French Open.
