Following the announcement of the tournament draw for the AFF Suzuki Cup in December, Bryan Robson’s Thailand has been backed to take the title despite being drawn in the proclaimed ‘group-of-death’, according to analysts.

Hanoi, the 15th of September 2010: Announced in Vietnam, co-hosts of the biennial tournament with Indonesia, the draw will see Robson’s improving Thai side face both Malaysia and Indonesia in Group A, while reigning champions Vietnam will face Singapore and Myanmar in Group B.

Two further teams while be added to the competition following October qualifying matches between Cambodia, Laos, Timor Leste (East Timor) and the Philippines.

Three-time winners of the AFF Suzuki Cup (formerly Tiger Cup), Thailand has been installed as the punters favourites to take the title in 2010, largely on the back of continued improvement and recent form under former England player and captain Bryan Robson.

Speaking on Thailand’s chances at the impending tournament, Robson stated, “(Co-hosts) Indonesia or Vietnam were obviously going to be in the group and provide us with a difficult game. But I would say that we will be one of the favourites in the competition.”

Held since 1996, the AFF Suzuki Cup has been dominated by three nations to date, with both Thailand and Singapore three-time winners and Indonesia unfortunate three-time losing finalists. The only nation to break the Thai-Singaporean stranglehold on the title is Vietnam who won the competition in 2008.

The AFF Suzuki Cup is traditionally held at the end of every second year, featuring two host nations. The final has been adapted over recent years to become a two-leg playoff, the victors winning on aggregate goals over the two matches, with penalties settling a tied result.
