Bangkok, the 27th of April 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Following the call for police reinforcements from the North over the weekend, Red Shirt leaders have successfully managed to ignite a provincial wide resistance in the region, hampering the convoy’s efforts to reach the capital.

As of Tuesday evening road blocks had reportedly been setup in Samut Sakhon, Phetchabun, Chachoengsao, Lop Buri, Sara Buri, Khon Kaen, Phitsanulok and Pathum Thani. Police convoys did manage to break through the blockades in Phitsanulok when a company of 150 policemen initiated a melee which saw 10 minutes of pushing and shoving with slight injuries reported on both sides.

The Pathum Thani blockade setup on the outskirts of Bangkok was also breached by police officers yesterday after a backup force arrived and instigated a charge on the Red Shirts lines, firing live ammunition into the air in attempts to intimidate and disperse the crowd. Up to 40 Red Shirt protesters were apprehended by officers and are being held at an unknown location.

Remarkably, blockades setup in Khon Kaen, not only successfully restricted the efforts of the police convoy, but convinced local district chiefs to join the cause by writing an open letter to the provincial governor asking him not to instruct civilian officials to disperse gathered Red Shirts supporters.

Red Shirt leaders, from the Ratchaprasong rally site, announced the success of almost all the attempts at hampering police reinforcements, who were believed to be descending on the capital to begin the Prime Ministers dispersal campaign against them. The United Front For Democracy Against Dictatorship leaders also praised protesters in Khon Kaen for their outstanding success and dedication to the cause.

Developments overnight saw a group of Red Shirt protesters successfully blockaded Bangkok’s Skytrain network after placing a blockade of tyres across the track at the Chidlom Station. Skytrain administrators are currently in negotiations with the demonstrators although the services, due to commence at 6:00am, have been temporarily suspended. Red Shirt leaders have moved to distance themselves from the Skytrain blockade, stating that the group had acted alone in their efforts.
