Rivals Prepare Rally Countering Anti-Government Protesters

BANGKOK, April 5 -- The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), the yellow-shirted rivals of the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), will demonstrate to counter a planned UDD rally due this Wednesday if the situation goes out of control, according to PAD coordinator Suriyasai Katasila on Sunday.

Mr. Suriyasai said he believed Wednesday’s UDD rally, aimed at ousting the three-month-old coalition government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, would become violent because their demands would be difficult for the government to accept.

The UDD demands are self-serving to its members and former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Mr. Suriyasai said, and are unacceptable to the government.

If violence occurs, the military will come out of their barracks and this will cause a negative image on the country in the eyes of international community, he said.

If the UDD protesters “provoke the military” to come out on the capital’s streets on Wednesday, the People’s Alliance will move immediately, Mr. Suriyasai said, because the PAD fears that the UDD supporters would cause a severe damage to the country, said Mr. Suriyasai. (TNA)
