Schumacher’s last Grand Prix was in Brazil, October 2006. By the time the new season commences he will be 41 years old. Although he will be one of the oldest drivers in the field, commentators believe he still has what it takes to be a formidable opponent on the grid. Former driver Eddie Irvine told BBC news: “He’s not at the peak of his game but he’s still good enough to win races as he has such an immense talent.”

Ross Brawn (Mercedes team director) and Michael Schumacher have had a long and fruitful relationship within the world of Formula one, winning all 7 of Schumacher’s titles together. The Mercedes team have officially taken over the championship winning Brawn outfit from last season, to which they supplied the engines for. Schumacher reportedly has signed a €7 million contract for 1 year which will see him work alongside compatriot Nico Rosberg.

Schumacher almost made his return to the sport last year when Ferrari President Luca Di Montezemolo approached him to replace injured first driver Felipe Massa, however a persistent neck injury prevented his comeback. Since retiring in 2006, Schumacher has worked extensively behind the scenes at Ferrari as a consultant. Ferrari President Montezemolo stated that he was sad to see Schumacher leave the team although he did admit that: “It was me that rekindled his desire to race after Massa was injured in Hungary.”

Last years Brawn team won the championship and manufacturer titles with British driver Jenson Button at the wheel. Button has now moved on to the McLaren team joining “wonderkid” Lewis Hamilton in spearheading their challenge. With former champion Fernando Alonso back at the Renault team for the second year running, the championship battle in the upcoming season is looking like it will be one of the closest in years.

With the new F1 season quickly approaching, the prospect of seeing former world champions Hamilton, Alonso, Schumacher and reigning champion Button on the same grid is sure to leave F1 fans, pundits and commentators licking their respective lips in anticipation.
