Water levels rose by 14 metres in 24 hours after torrential rains in the Chongqing Municipality where the accident occurred, local media reported.

The elevated water level caused a restaurant boat that was moored in the Jialing river to slip anchor and drift downstream where it collided with another boat before capsizing.

Eleven people were on the restaurant boat at the time. Early reports suggest all were rescued safely from the water.
