Pattaya, 23rd January 2011 [Pattaya Daily News]: At 23.45 p.m. Officials in Sattahip, managed to rescue the unlucky 15 year old boy, who was sitting on a cement cap -smoking a cigarette- to close the mouth of the well, before it collapsed, causing the boy to fall down the 30m deep well. Struggling for air and paddling with his feet to stay above water until fatigued slowly set in. The officials of the rescue foundation managed to rescue the boy safely.

The incident of the unfortunate 15 year old boy, who fell head over into a 30 meter deep artesian well, occurred late in the evening on the 23rd January 2011. It took about 1 hour for officials to save the boy. Head of the rescue foundation Sattahip, Mr. Phichit Giakun received the notification from Mrs. Phratueang Chomchuen, 63, (residence: 59/, Soi Watkaokantamat, Moo 9, Sattahip, Chonburi) -grandmother of the boy- who said her grandson tumbled into the deep well and she wasn’t able to help him herself. After the notification, the rescue foundation and an emergency relief officer from the municipal district Udomsak (altogether 10 rescuers) hurried to the scene immediately, equipped with breathing apparatus (SCBA), ropes, and a harness.

The scene of the incident was at the residence of the teenager, a 1 story single house as the well the boy had fallen into was situated next to it. When the rescue team arrived, they found family members of the boy gathered around the well trying to help the boy by helping with an electric fan to blow air into the well. The well was 30 meters deep with another 10 meters filled with water and had 1.20m width. The officials had to ventilate the well in order for the boy to be able to breathe.

Young Mr.Kittipong Thaphi, the 15 year old boy, had been paddling his feet for over 30 minutes, and was showing fatigue, while a lot of trash was floating by him. The officials immediately sent down the breathing apparatus (SCBA), in order for the boy to be able to breathe properly. After that Mr.Chainarong Chaikan 29, an official of the rescue foundation team, put on a breathing apparatus himself then roped down the well in order to attach the harness to the boy. By the roped harness the other rescuers who were at the top pulled the boy out, safely. After being secured the – boy himself who was conscious of his situation – was very weary and fatigued.

Questioning the young Mr. Kittipong, he said, he was watching TV in the house with his family when he felt like smoking a cigarette. He therefore stepped outside to smoke, and sat on the cement cap of the well. He never imagined that the cap could break and collapse, but it did. He therefore was not able to grab onto anything in time, and fell head over into the well along with the cap parts. He had to struggle to get his head to the water surface, then struggled paddling with his feet to keep his head above water, waiting screaming for help. As he was 30m underground struggling for his life, he started having breathing difficulties, his feet started feeling numb and he was starting to be shaky and exhausted. As there was only little air below, he feels very fortunate that he was heard and his family could notify the rescue foundation in time to save him.

Grandmother, Mrs. Phratueang Chomchuen, said that, after her grandson stepped outside for a cigarette, she and the other family members continued watching TV, until a loud sound coming from next to the house caused them to look outside. The family members therefore hurried outside to see what was going on, and found Young Mr. Kittipong in the well. They then tried to use bamboo sticks, for him to grab onto and pull him out, but it did not work. After 10 minutes, her grandson, yelled from down the well, that he could not breathe, making everybody feel more uneasy and scared. Then they thought of other ways in which to help young Kittipong by throwing down empty water tanks for Kittipong to hold onto. They also got an electric fan outside, through using a number of extension cables, and used it to blow air down the well. They then notified the rescue foundation who were able to rescue Kittipongs life successfully. The cap was an old cap, which could not hold the weight of Kittipong, who weighs 70Kg, and it therefore collapsed causing the incident.
