Mr Korkaew, a candidate for the Puea Thai party, is one of five candidates who registered at Klongsamwa district while Panich Vikitsreth, former assistant to the foreign minister, is running under the Democrat banner. Democrat candidate Panich gets number 1, Puea Thai candidate Korkaew gets number 4 in Bangkok by-election registration.

About 180 police officers provided security at the district office and set up checkpoints as crowds came to give moral support to both sides.

Mr Korkaew will return to prison once his candidacy registration for the by-election is done. His lawyer plans to seek bail for him that he may campaign to canvass votes part of the time or for the entire period until the contest is done. The lawyer will seek court approval for the candidate to be interviewed by the media and address his supporters from a stage. The last option is to ask the court to allow his party to run a campaign on behalf of the detained candidate.

The Opposition Puea Thai Party is nominating Mr Korkaew as its candidate to run in the July 25 by-election in Bangkok’s Constituency 6 to fill the vacant seat of late Democrat MP Thiwa Ngernyuang who died of cancer on June 11.

Mr Korkaew, charged with terrorism together with many of his fellow Red Shirt leaders, is now being detained and denied bail at Bangkok Remand Prison.

The Opposition was earlier expected to nominate another UDD leader Natthawut Saikua, as earlier proposed by his fellow leader Jatuporn Prompan, who is also a Puea Thai MP.

Mr Natthawat who is now detained and denied bail at Klong Prem Prison following a terrorism charge was not selected, however, for fear that he might not be eligible as he is not a native of Bangkok but Nakhon Si Thammarat. (TNA)
