Fifty-two-year-old Suchart, also known as Worawut Thanangkorn, was accused of delivering a speech deemed offensive to the monarchy from a Red Shirt rally stage at Sanam Luang on the evening of Oct 14, 2008.

He was arrested on Nov 1 this year while he was at a food centre of Platinum Fashion Mall in Bangkok downtown near Ratchaprasong intersection.

Under the lese majeste law, a defendant can face between 3-15 years of imprisonment.

The court issued the verdict Nov 24, convicting the UDD ally to six years in jail, but after pleading guilty his sentence was commuted by half. (MCOT online news)
