Red roses greet army general on visit to Phuket

Maj Gen Peerapon Wiriyakul, Commander of the Royal Thai Army’s 41st Infantry Division, which is based in Nakhon Sri Thammarat, this morning (May 27) visited Governor Maitri Inthusut at Provincial Hall.

He received a warm welcome with bouquets of red roses from about 700 people who approve of the Army taking power last Thursday (May 22).
 
They included students, including students from the Reserve Officer Training Corps, farmers, government officials and ordinary people. They all asked the general to pass on their blessings and messages of courage to commander in chief General Prayuth Chan-Ocha.
 
Thanadon Yuenyon, a representative of local farmers, said, “Thank you to the [National Council for Peace and Order – NCPO] for solving farmers’ problem. The farmers of Phuket are happy to support the NCPO.”Gen Peerapon, in return, thanked people for their blessings.
 
He said that although there are certain restrictions at present, such as the curfew from 10pm to 5am, everything else is normal for tourists. Businesses had been cooperating well with the curfew, he noted.
 
Now, in Phuket, he said, the police and the army are working together, armed only with light weapons, “to take care of the population”. They are also cooperating with police and others in places such as Tah Chat Chai check point.But, he added, armed officers will not appear in tourism areas, as they do not want make tourists nervous.
