Rayong Fishermen Refusing To Dismantle Dwellings

A spokesman for about 100 irate Rayong fishermen will meet with the president of the Parliament to air grievances about being bullied by local authorities who want their beach houses torn down. The dwellings encroach on the beach and violate zoning laws, authorities said.

RAYONG – April 30, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; at 6 p.m., a protest was held by more than 100 coastal fishermen living in the seaside area of Lacharern beach, Muang Rayong. The irate fishermen gathered in front of Paknam temple, Paknam, Rayong metropolitan municipality.

The fishermen were upset that the municipality sent their authority to notify to the police at Muang Rayong police station to issue threats of legal action accusing their housing accommodations of invading the seaside area.

Mr. Lamom Boonpong , 61 years old, living at the house number 427/3, seaside road, Paknam, Muangrayong, said that in the previous week, the residents who did coastal fishery for living were served warrants from the Muang Rayong police station by the orders of the municipality.

The warrants charged the residents with not deconstructing their illegal buildings, in violation of zoning regulations of the local authorities. According to the 1979 bill controlling building construction, the fishermen are charged with building their accommodations invading the beach without permission from the local authority of Rayong metropolitan municipality.

Mr. Lamom continued that after the residents got bullied by the local authority, he went to complain to the Parliament, and has an appointment for a meeting on May 2.

He is listing all the names of the affected residents, and collecting money to be travelling expense to see the president of the parliament. Also invited to the meeting are the mayor, the governor, and the police officers to explain their side of the case.
