“Minor” Rayong Chlorine Leak Hospitalises 70 Workers

A chemical leak at the Hemaraj Eastern Industrial Estate in Rayong has forced the closure one factory to close with 70 workers reportedly hospitalised as a result of the leak.

Rayong, the 8th of June, 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Thailand’s Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanavisit confirmed that 70 workers from the Hemaraj Eastern Industrial Estate have been hospitalised after what is being described as a minor chemical leak.

The incident occurred on Monday morning at the Aditya Birla Chemicals factory in the industrial estate. All workers were evacuated from the factory a minor leak of the dangerous chemical chlorine occurred. Approximately 259 workers had complained of various respiratory problems, nausea, vomiting as well as eye and throat irritations.

Mr. Laksanavisit explained that a help center had been setup in Rayong to help workers, employees and any local residents that may have been affected by the chemical leak. The incident has been declared a level 2 accident and is due to be handed by provincial bodies.

This incident is the second involving a chemical leak at one of Thailand’s major industrial estates on the Eastern Seaboard after last weeks xylene and butanone leak at Amata Nakhon Industrial Estate in Chon-Buri hospitalised 20 workers.
