The 26-year-old mother was earlier airlifted from a hospital in Ratchaburi to King Chulalongkorn Memorial hospital in Bangkok after she contracted the virus and her lungs became severely infected.

Mr Manit said the ministry was informed by her husband that she had already succumbed and that he did not wish any further operation or forensic procedures to investigate the cause of death because of his feeling for his wife.

Dr Adisorn Patradul, director of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, said the patient’s health was destroyed by the virus and was expected to be the cause of her death. The infant girl was delivered prematurely by Caesarean section and it was found that she was infected with the potentially deadly virus, Thailand?s first clear mother to child transmission case. Her condition has improved.

A clinical investigation is being conducted to determine whether the infant contracted the virus through the bloodstream or from the amniotic fluid.

Meanwhile, Director-General of the Department of Disease Control Dr Somchai Chakkrabhand said that until now the department found no case of resistance to the prescribed anti-viral drug Oseltamivir and that most patients response very well to treatment using it. (TNA)
