Australia, 18th August 2010: After Australia’s vote against becoming a republic in a 1999 referendum, the issue continues to be divisive. Ms. Julia Gillard, originally from Wales in the UK has stated that Australia may become a republic after the end of Queen Elizabeth II reign.

Just days ahead of a general election, Ms. Gillard said the End of the Queen Elizabeth II reign would be an appropriate time for Australia to move away from British Monarchy as head of state and become a republic.

Tony Abbott, Ms. Gillard’s main opponent is a staunch monarchist and up to this point the question of an Australian republic has hardly had a mention in the latest election campaign.

It has been reported that although the country is strongly patriotic, it has not been considered an urgent priority, with Ms. Gillard indicating that it will not become one for her Labour government while the Queen is still ruling.

Although Ms. Gillard is herself a strong republican, she has a deep affection for the 84 year old Head of State whom is wished a long and healthy life.

Ms. Gillard feels that once there is a change in the monarchy, this would be an appropriate time to move towards a republic even if it doesn’t happen for another ten years or more.

This argument has been rife since Australia became a federation with republicans arguing that Australia has changed demographically and culturally and is no longer British and should not be influenced by a country eight thousand miles away.
