Transport minister delays Don Muang flight transfer proposals

On Monday Feb 5TH, Admiral Thira Haocharoen, the Thai Transport Minister admitted to cabinet members that the details of the proposal to transfer some non-connecting domestic flights back to the former Bangkok International Airport at Don Muang were not yet complete.

Admiral Thira said that there was as yet insufficient information regarding the proposed move, which is an attempt to relieve pressure at Suwarnabhumi Airport due to runway repairs and other factors, such as the problem of outsourcing ground staff. This latter problem stemmed from having terminated the contracts of certain service providers when Suvarnabhumi became Thailand’s main airport in September, 2006

“Some delays are needed to ensure the planned transfer of the local flights back to Don Muang is clear and complete,” the admiral maintained.

Further meetings with the cabinet are scheduled to occur, probably next week, when the Transport Ministry has all the facts to hand. This would still leave a breathing space of 45 days, before flights at Don Muang Airport recommence at the Thai New Year Festival of Songkran, when a substantial number of passengers are expected.
