Pattaya Open: Russian Rout in Second Round

Three Russian competitors have successfully advanced through to the quarter-finals of the PTT Pattaya open on Thursday. This included the current title holder and tournament favourite Vera Zvonareva.

Pattaya, the 11th of February 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Thursday’s continuation of the PTT Pattaya Open 2010 saw Russian first-seed Vera Zvonareva advance into the quarters at the expense of Italian Alberta Brianti. The match finishing in just over an hour, 6-3, 6-2.

 The battle of the Russians, between the un-seeded Ekaterina Bychkova and third-seed Vera Dushevina ended in an upset win, which saw Bychkova win 60% of the points taking a two set 6-4, 6-1 win.

Anna Chakvetadze was the third Russian into the last eight after her demolition of Anastasia Rodionova, marking her first back-to-back win in competition since early last season at New Haven.

Fifth-seeded Austrian Sybille Bammer won through to the quarters in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 against Chinese Taipei’s Chang Kai-Chen. Whilst Germany’s Tatjana Malek also advanced in three against Chan Yung-Jan, 6-2, 0-6, 7-5.


Fridays Quarter-Finals will see; Vera Zvonareva v’s Sybille Bammer, Yaroslava Shvedova v’s Tatjana Malek, Sesil Karatantcheva v’s Ekaterina Bychkova and Anna Chakvetadze v’s local favourite Tamarine Tanasugarn. Tamarine will also feature in the doubles semi-finals with Marina Erakovic.
