PTT Pattaya Open: Tamarine Upsets 2nd Seed German

The local favorite at the PTT Pattaya Open, Tamarine Tanasugarn claimed an unlikely three set upset victory over the second-seeded German on Wednesday.

Pattaya, the 10th of February 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Second round action saw Thai favorite Tamarine advance to the Quarter Finals in three sets against the heavily backed Sabina Lisicki. Tamarine, receiving two third-set service breaks won the match 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, despite only winning 4 more points than the second-seeded German.

Two other relative upsets included the early exit of last years defeated finalist Sania Mirza. The Indian ace fell at the hands of German Tatjana Malek, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Seventh seed Japanese player Kimiko Date Krumm retired in her match with an ankle injury. Australian Anastasia Rodionova progressed from the match-up in which she was leading 6-1, 1-0 at the time of Krumm’s retirement.

Kazak, Sesil Karatancheva defeated eighth-seeded Julia Georges in under an hour winning, 6-2, 6-1. Whilst 4th seeded Kazak Yaroslava Shvedova defeated Chanelle Scheepers 7-6 (10-8), 6-3.

A continuation of first round matches from Tuesday saw Russian third-seed Vera Dushevina defeat Galina Voskoboeva 6-4, 6-2. Whilst the 5th seeded Austrian champ Sybille Bammer took over 2 hours on court to put away Marina Erakovic, 7-6 (10-8), 7-5.
