Protesters at Asean Summit Disperse After Submitting Letter

PATTAYA, April 10 (TNA) - Anti-Thai government protesters led by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) on Friday evening dispersed from the hotel where the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is holding summits with its six dialogue partners after the red-clad activists submitted a letter charging that the host government has no authority to govern the country.

Ten UDD protesters led by Arisman Pongreungrong, a former member of parliament and staunch supporter of convicted ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, submitted the letter to Bala Kumar Palaniappan, a representative of the ASEAN Secretariat office at the hotel.

After submitting the letter, Mr. Arisman told journalists that the letter gave details why his group could not accept Abhisit Vejjajiva as prime minister of Thailand and that UDD would wait whether the government would follow his group’s demands.

UDD protesters have demanded that Mr. Abhisit resign without condition, to dissolve the House of Representatives and call for a general election.

Mr. Arisman said his group would not disrupt the three-day summit which ends Sunday.

He said his group will spend Friday night at the provincial seat of Chon Buri and would return on Saturday with more UDD core leaders from Bangkok joining. (TNA)
