Prolotherapy–Pain Management

Prolotherapy is a natural technique that stimulates the body into repairing itself when a little assistance is required. The word prolotherapy is actually a combination of two words, ‘Proliferation’ which means formation of growth, new tissues or ligaments and ‘Therapy’.

In many cases, anti- inflammatory medications are prescribed or surgery and joint replacements which don’t always help.  Prolotherapy is an irritant solution which is injected into the joint or where the ligaments and tendons are attached to the bones.

Ligaments are the bands of fibrous tissue that connect bones together in joints. These ligaments can become weakened due to an injury and do not always repair itself to the original condition. This is because ligaments do not get much blood supply resulting in a slow healing process.

A solution of dextrose or sugar water is injected into the joint or where it is attached to the bone causing the area to become inflamed which in turn increases the blood supply as well as nutrients, thus stimulating the repair of tissue.

Medical history says that this technique was used on soldiers afflicted with dislocations or torn ligaments whereby a heated poker was inserted into the affected joint which appeared to miraculously heal itself.  These days hot pokers have been replaced by injections which is basically the same principle, inducing the body to heal itself.

Prolotherapy is a very effective treatment for musculoskeletal pain, such as sciatica, herniated or degenerated discs, partially torn ligaments, tendons and cartilage, carpal tunnel syndrome, unhealed whiplash injuries chronic tendonitis, neck pain, back pain, arthritis and many more joint related pain.

Treatment differs from one person to another, depending on the individuals’ rate of healing.  For some, a few treatment sessions are all that is needed, while others may require ten or more sessions, but generally, 4 -6 sessions should be adequate for one area.

The best option is to consult a physician trained in prolotherapy to find out if it is the right treatment for you, then once started he will keep you informed on the progress and how long the healing process will take.
