With 241 seats required for an overall majority, Samak Sundaravej is seeking alliances with other parties with a view to forming a coalition government. With most of the votes counted the result is unlikely to change greatly The PPP’s main rival, the Democrat Party, is set to win 166 seats and Chart Thai 39.

Democratic party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, said, “If the PPP succeeds in forming a coalition, the Democrat Party is ready to become the opposition. If the PPP fails, then the Democrat Party is ready to form its own coalition,”

Analysts believe that any coalition this could prove weak and short lived.

Mr Thaksin and his Thai Rak Thai party were removed from power on 19th September 2006 by a military coup and he has since being living in exile. The military have been trying to reduce his influence in politics.. He intends to return to Thailand on 14th February, when he may well face arrest on corruption charges.
