Bangkok, the 7th of February 2010 [TNA]: Speaking during his weekly television and radio address, Mr. Abhisit urged the people to receive and digest news, especially on conflicts within society, with utmost care, and gave assurances that government would try to prevent any civil disorder from occurring.

“There have been reports on conflicts which could lead to violence during the past week,” said Mr Abhisit, adding that certain groups of people wanted to create panic and fear, and there was even talk about a coup. “The government wants to reemphasise that there are no conditions to date [to warrant] creating such incidents,” said Mr. Abhisit. “Regarding the (national) economy, it’s recovering on a sustainable basis, while on politics there is a parliamentary system to continuously check the government’s performance,” said Mr Abhisit. “Political opposition parties are about to submit a no-confidence motion against the government and this is an important opportunity to probe the government’s works under the parliamentary system.”

His remarks were made as members of anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) are launching almost daily demonstrations in the capital and upcountry as the court is scheduled to issue its verdict on February 26 whether to seize Bt76.6 billion in frozen assets of fugitive, ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Mr Thaksin was ousted in a bloodless coup in September 2006. Mr. Abhisit urged the people not to let the country lose an opportunity by using violence to solve prevailing conflict, saying that he was confident that the country could weather any problems encountered in chaos. (TNA)
