Smolensk, the 10th of April 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Officials in the Smolensk region of Russian stated that the Tupolev 154 plane, carrying 132 Polish diplomats and the President, crashed into the tops of trees as it came in for landing in thick fog.

Several other government figures were on board the flight including the army chief of staff, central bank governor, deputy foreign minister and the Presidents wife. The contingent was in Russia to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, in which the Soviets slaughtered several thousand Poles.

Irina Andrianova a Russian Emergency Ministry spokesman stated the plane had been flying from Moscow to Smolensk when it appears it crashed into some trees on its approach to land, breaking up and killing all 132 passengers and crew on board.

“As it was preparing for landing, the Polish president’s aircraft did not make it to the landing strip,” he said. “According to preliminary reports, it got caught up in the tops of trees, fell to the ground and broke up into pieces. There are no survivors in that crash. “We are clarifying how many people there were in the [Polish] delegation. According to preliminary reports, 85 members of the delegation and the crew.”

An unnamed correspondent to the BBC has stated that there had been repeated calls for the Polish leaders to upgrade their planes, the Tupolev 154 having been manufactured in the 1960’s.

President Kaczynski is a somewhat controversial figure in Polish politics, advocating an exceedingly right wing Catholic agenda, opposing free market reforms and favouring the retention of social welfare programmes.
