Police Deactivated A Suspected Bomb In Central London

Friday 29 June 2007, Police have disabled a car bomb containing gas cylinders in the heart of central London near Piccadilly Circus.. One eyewitness told Sky News that door staff at a nearby nightclub alerted police after the car was driven into trash cans before the driver ran off "There is no indication it was about to be remotely detonated or detonated at all," said CNN International Security Correspondent Paula Newton.

She said it was potentially aimed at theatergoers or nearby nightclubs, echoing plots recently thwarted by anti-terror police in which Islamic militants intended to attack prominent dance venues and shopping malls.

Officers carried out a controlled explosion after reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in Haymarket shortly before 0200 BST (0100 GMT).

The area was cordoned off while police examined what they described as a “potentially viable explosive device”.

The BBC’s Andy Tighe said the timing was significant coming a day after Gordon Brown became prime minister, and with the second anniversary of the 7 July bombings approaching.

Friday’s incident could prove to be the first major test for new Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the former finance minister who succeeded Tony Blair just two days earlier, appointing new Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, in charge of domestic security.

“For Gordon Brown it is a rude awakening to the realities you take on as prime minister,” CNN’s European Political Editor Robin Oakley said
