Police Catch Up to Elderly Murder Suspect

The former mayor of Saensuk was arrested after nearly a decade of evading imprisonment for the 2003 murder of a local politician. Mr. Somchai Khunpluem or Kamnan Paou, and several other suspects were convicted of hiring a hitman to kill Mr. Prayoon Sitthichot or Kamnan Yoon in 2003.

BANGKOK – January 30,2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; Pol. Lt. Gen. Pongpat Chayapan, the commissioner of central detective police, revealed that the Commando forces of the Crime Suppression Division had arrested Mr. Somchai Khunpluem or Kamnan Paou, along with 3 allies who are the prime suspects in the 2003 murder of Mr. Prayoon Sitthichot or Kamnan Yoon. The murder victim was the formal head of the Samet sub-district in Chonburi.

Mr. Somchai was also convicted by the Criminal Court in 2004 for cheating to buy public land in Tambon Khao Mai Kaew, to build a pond to dispose of garbage. Mr. Somchai, who is in his early 70s, had been evading authorities for nearly a decade after the judgements in his court cases.

But Mr. Somchai was finally arrested while sitting in his Black Lexas RX 270, Dor Dor, 9579 Bangkok, at the toll expressway turnpike. He was returning home from the Samitivej hospital, Srinakarin.

Police searching Mr. Somchai’s car found many medicines to treat heart disease and blood pressure and other ailments. Mr. Somchai was using a fake name on his doctor’s bill, which identified him as Mr. Kim Saetang. Besides the medications, police also seized the car’s registration papers, and a gun with 6 bullets underneath the car seat. Mr. Somchai was detained and held for questioning by the Special Operations Squad Chokechai 4.

Pol. Gen. Adul Sangsingkaew, the commissioner general of Royal Thai police office, said that he had been informed about the arrest of Mr. Somchai. Also informed of the arrest was Mr. Somchai’s son, Mr. Sonthaya Khunpluem, who did not know his father had just gotten arrested. Mr. Sonthaya said he will have to check the facts of the situation before taking any action.

Mr. Somchai will be questioned by Pol. Lt. Gen.Pongpat Chayapan, the commissioner of central detective police, who will then hold a press conference again in the afternoon.
