Police Arrest French ATM Fraudster

A French ATM fraudster has been arrested in Phuket following a joint operation between the Police Bureau, the Tourist Police and the Pattaya Police. The man had allegedly been stealing money from ATM machines using fake cards in several Thai tourist centres, including Pattaya, Phuket and Chiang Mai.

Pattaya, 27 November 2010 (PDN): At 8.00pm on Friday Police Superintendent Colonel Nunthawut Suwanla-ong from the Pattaya Police announced the apprehension of a French ATM fraudster following the issue of a warant by the Pattaya Provincial Court.

Major Colonel Panya Mamaen (Police Bureau Deputy Commissioner-Investigation department) and police Major Colonel Adid Ngamjitsuksee (Tourism Police Commissioner) have recently been working together to apprehend a foreign gang that has been stealing money from bank accounts at ATM machines with fake ATM cards. The gang normally targeted tourist cities, especially Pattaya. and their crimes have caused considerable trouble for Thai banks.

On 26th November, investigations led to the discovery that a gang member was staying in room 302 at the Furama Exclusive Hotel, Sirirat Road, Patong, Krathoo, Phuket. Subsequently Pattaya Police immediately applied for a warrant from the Pattaya Provincial Court, to raid the room the following morning at 2:00 am.

In the room police detained a French national, Mr. Belkacem Batache [35], with passport number 10 AV 041821 who was identified from a picture taken by Pattaya Police showing Mr. Batache stealing money from an ATM machine. Also in the room police found a Visa card, an un-specified white-green card, 40,000 baht in cash, and 3 mobile phones which were kept as evidence.

Mr. Batache was charged with cloning ATM cards and theft and was duly sent from Phuket to Pattaya for further processing.
