PM: Will Visit Public in Other Provinces, Despite Protests

BANGKOK, March 8 (TNA) -- Despite boisterous protests by anti-government demonstrators against himself and other cabinet ministers during visits to the public at various upcountry locations on Saturday, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Sunday he is not disheartened and plans to visit other provinces as soon as next week.

Speaking to journalists, Mr. Abhisit said his visit to the central province of Lop Buri on Saturday proved satisfactory as he had met with the people, answered their questions and noted their hardships.

Other ministers who visited the provinces also demonstrated that the government wants to work for the well-being of the country, and that the trips had nothing to do with politics, Mr. Abhisit said, adding that he believed the people would welcome the opportunity for ministers to meet them and exchange views.

Mr. Abhisit faced protesters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) during his visit who threw plastic water bottles, foot-shaped clappers and flip-flop sandals at his motorcade as it arrived at a health centre in the province.

Core leaders of UDD have pledged to rally against Mr. Abhisit and his ministers wherever they visit upcountry. The government announced earlier that all cabinet ministers will visit all Thailand’s provinces during the next two weeks to listen to public grievances over economic problems and responses to the implementation of government programmes aimed at cushioning the impact of prevailing economic problems.

Mr. Abhisit said he won’t visit upcountry again until next week as he will travel to Britain this week.

Asked whether his government could erase prevailing social divisions, Mr. Abhisit said his government is determined to do so but it would be impossible if those who oppose him disagree.

“I think all Thais should help each other as all the people are facing economic problems, especially those who are unemployed. Everybody should help build confidence,”  Mr. Abhisit said. (TNA)
