PM Urges Public to Accept Party Dissolution Rulings

BANGKOK, June 10 - In a move to encourage reconciliation among a fragmented and factionalised Thai public, Prime Minister Gen. Surayud Chulanont on Sunday urged the people to accept the rulings handed down on May 30 by the Constitution Tribunal, which dissolved four political parties, including the former ruling Thai Rak Thai party.

In an address broadcast on television and radio stations, Prime Minister Surayud said the dissolution of Thai Rak Thai and the ban of its executive members from undertaking political activities for five years should be accepted by all segments of the public because the rulings of the Constitution Tribunal were final.

“Several major policies implemented by Thai Rak Thai party such as the medical-scheme for people will continue in society. We must thank the Thai Rak Thai party for creating and implementing projects which benefit poor people, but at the same time we must accept the verdict of the Constitution Tribunal on dissolving this party because it had committed several political blunders,” Gen. Surayud said.

Thai Rak Thai party was found guilty of performing electoral fraud during the general election in April 2006.

The prime minister said his government has heard voices aired by various persons supporting Thai Rak Thai, and their complaints were considered as part of the national agenda which he believed elected members of the House of Representatives from an upcoming general election could work for the betterment of lives of all Thai people.

Sunday’s speech by Gen. Surayud followed a series of rallies by several anti-coup organisations calling for the ouster of the Council for National Security which staged last year’s September 19 bloodless coup and the interim government which the coup members installed.
