PM “Unsurprised” By Us Intellectual Property Stance

BANGKOK, May 2 - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Saturday he is not surprised that the United States has maintained Thailand on its Priority Watch List (PWL) following Thailand's failure to significantly improve its performance regarding intellectual property rights (IPR) violations.

It’s within our earlier expectations, said Mr. Abhisit, adding that Washington has concern for violations of its intellectual property, while the assessment of Thailand’s status was made over a relatively short period of time.

Because of the time constraints, he said, the US opted to maintain Thailand?s trade status as it was. Consequently the Thai government must work harder to persuade Washington to upgrade its status.

Thailand will ensure that intellectual property law is applied and that violations are prosecuted. There is no need to issue new laws as there are already several laws governing the issue, Mr. Abhisit.

The US Trade Representative (USTR) on Thursday issued it review of 77 trading partners for this year’s report, placing 46 countries on its priority list, on a less stringent “Watch List” or the “monitoring list.”

The American trade office said 12 of its trading partners on the PWL, including Thailand, did not provide an adequate level of IPR protection or enforcement, or market access for those relying on intellectual property protection.

They will be the subject of intense engagement through bilateral discussions in the coming year, the USTR statement said. (TNA)
