Pm: Thailand’s New Cabinet Line-Up Now Complete

Mr. Somchai, brother-in-law of ousted, fugitive prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, told journalists that the new cabinet line-up is now in his hands after all six political parties in the coalition government had submitted names of proposed ministerial portfolios under their quotas.

Neither did the new premier confirm or deny speculation that he will concurrently hold the defence minister’s portfolio, as did his predecessor.

Mr. Somchai said his cabinet member selection was not confined to MPs elected during last year’s election, but also includes some unelected persons whom he considers fit for ministerial posts.

The Secretariat of the Cabinet is now verifying the proposed cabinet ministers’ qualifications, said Mr. Somchai.

Traditionally, the list of the new cabinet ministers will be forwarded to His Majesty the King for royal endorsement which will be followed by oath-taking ceremony before they can start their work.

The prime minister also received a visit from United States ambassador to Thailand, Eric G. John, at his residence on Monday.

Mr. Somchai said his one-hour meeting with the US ambassador was informal and did not touch on Thailand’s political crisis.

The US ambassador told reporters that he had extended his congratulations on the occasion of Mr. Somchai being voted by the House of Representatives as Thailand’s new premier. (TNA)
