In his weekly address broadcast on television and radio, Mr. Samak said he would first talk with newly appointed Commerce Minister Chaiya Sasomsup on rice export problems before allowing the ministry to be responsible for its exports as before.

Mr. Samak recently ordered the Ministry of Finance and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, a state agency, to jointly help solve problems regarding the rice trade, disappointing senior commerce ministry officials.

Thailand is the world’s number one rice exporter.

Mr. Samak’s remarks were made after Mr. Chaiya pledged on being named commerce minister that he would try his best to let his ministry handling rice exports. What the government is doing is to assist in solving problems, he said. Rice prices in the past rose sharply but farmers still earned low selling prices.

The prime minister said his government had decided to sell rice in its stocks on a government-to-government basis, an action he said would not affect the private sector.

He dismissed charges that he did not trust the previous commerce minister Mingkwan Saengsuwan, saying that the government would not survive if those involved in the rice trade could not stay in the business. The government must also look after farmers, millers, exporters and government civil servants, he added. (TNA)
