Pattaya 18th December 2010 (PDN) : During the weekend security was tight in Pattaya, a red-shirt strongold, as Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva chaired an end of year seminar at the Ambassador City Hotel in Jomtien. The two day seminar was attended by local community leaders and various organisations and its theme was the “decentralisation of power and promotion of local administration”.

PM Abhisit said that the decentralisation of power to local government was an important government strategy, and a policy he was determined to push through, inspite of the political and legal problems which had delayed implementation of the changes required. He said he planned to increase the budget allocation for local administrations by at least 35 per cent.

He stressed the importance of the integration of central and local government, with the local government reaching out to their communities and implementing government policies.

As part of the decentralisation process the government will also implement a “one province, one university” project to relieve overcrowding in the capital’s universities and allow authorities to apply more human resources to research and development tailored to the needs of the specific region.
