Pletnev to Complete European Tour, Enacts Media Ban

Russian musician Mikhail Pletnev appeared for his scheduled court appearance in Pattaya recently, following which he announced his intention to undergo a self enacted media ban over his ongoing “child sex” case in Thailand.

Pattaya, the 13th of August 2010: Appearing at the Pattaya District Court in accordance with his bail agreement, Pletnev announced last week his intended media silence exclaiming he has not “mastered the role of the global villain,” according to Russian media outlet RIA Novosti. The statement is believed to relate to his perceived unjust treatment by the Russian and international media.

Regardless of his intended silence in relation to media questioning, Pletnev did reveal he would keep to his tour of Spain, Poland and Switzerland in the next fortnight, returning to front the Thai court on the 24th of August.

“Tomorrow (12th of August) I fly to Moscow and from there I will go on tour in Spain, Poland and Switzerland; I will return to Thailand to appear in court on August 24,” Pletnev said.

Previous media reports stating that Pletnev’s Thai visa had been cancelled over his ongoing case in Thailand have been proved false. An unnamed Thai immigration spokesperson recently revealed that Pletnev’s visa remains valid and he is free to travel based on previous instructions of the Thai courts.

Despite announcing his intention to appear at several European concerts, Pletnev cancelled his scheduled appearances with the Russian National Orchestra (RNO) at the upcoming BBC Proms and Edinburgh Festivals in the United Kingdom. The decision came after much media speculation and intense scrutiny by event organisers.

Under the terms of his bail conditions, Pletnev is required to appear before the Pattaya District Court every 12-days. In accordance with Thai law, public prosecutors have a total of 84-days to submit a case against Pletnev or the charges will be dropped.
