Pattaya, the 6th of August 2010: The RNO is scheduled to perform at both the BBC Proms and Edinburgh Festivals in mid-August, with famed conductor and pianist Mikhail Pletnev their conductor. An ongoing court case in Thailand over child sex allegations has forced the classical music genius to cancel his commitments with the orchestra.

The BBC Proms is an eight-week summer season of daily orchestral classical music concerts and is held annually from the Royal Albert Hall in London. The other event Mr. Pletnev has withdrawn from is the Edinburgh International Festival, an event of the performing arts that takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland, over three weeks and is strictly invitational.

Referring only briefly to his trial in Thailand, Mr. Pletnev released, “I do not wish to overshadow the wonderful music making of the RNO and their tour in the UK with the current accusations surrounding my person. I will not comment on the ongoing investigation, but I hope the matter will be resolved speedily and it will be clear that I am innocent of the accusations against me.”

Mr. Pletnev is currently released on bail on charges of having sexual intercourse with a minor and is believed to be residing in Thailand for the remainder of court proceedings. At present, Mr. Pletnev is required to report to the Pattaya District Court every 12-days under the terms of his bail agreement.

Andrey Boreyko, a former member of the Russian National Orchestra Conductor Collegium, has been named as his replacement for both concerts.
