The occasional (2 – 3 monthly boxing tournaments at the Soi 2 boxing stadium just off Thepprasit Rd. (opposite the weekend.market), are a great spectator sport, and well worth attending.

There were some good matches at a recent evening tournament, with “Sackchai” from Australia and Samelov.from Russia, both KO’ing their opponents in the first round or two. This strategy is being increasingly employed by overseas boxers, who realize that if they do not KO their Thai opponents in the first few rounds, the Thai Boxer will more than likely win on points with his superior kicking abilities.

However, the overseas boxers did not get it all their own way, with another European boxer being forced to retire injured, due to powerful and superior kicking by his Thai opponent. There are also bouts for young boys and girls, which are great entertainment value and serve as good character building exercises for the kids. Pattaya’s Champion Muay Thai Boxing lady, Isobel, from the “Scorpion Gym” in South Pattaya, has left for England, for a short visit, to fight the UK lady’s Muay Thai champion, and we all wish her success, for attempting such a tough match.

These boxing tournaments are great entertainment value and for a few hundred baht are will worth attending, even if you are not a boxing fanatic. By paying the VIP price, you are allocated a lounge chair or suite (all of your very own), where you can look on in total comfort from a close ringside position.
