When planning your garden and deciding what plants are required, think first what you want from it once you have finished.  A garden can offer a return to nature or a sense of spirituality Gardens can be symbols of meaning and enchantment, providing mood and symbolic reminders of life’s blessings. With so many garden accessories and décor available you could choose to reproduce childhood memories or something to express your inner self, something to calm your spirit and soul. Your garden can be your sanctuary.

Balconies are quite often used for storage of bicycles, kids’ toys or just plain old junk, instead of somewhere to relax.  With a little creativity and planning you could change your balcony into a beautiful paradise. A balcony can be designed as an extension of your living room and adding a few pieces of well chosen furniture can turn it into a warm and inviting area. Before choosing your furniture it is important to consider the size of the balcony.  If you have the luxury of a large one there is plenty of comfortable furniture to choose from, making it a great place for entertaining.

If a large balcony, adding some greenery in the form of large potted plants carefully placed can make it look quite lush and tropical, but remember not to over do it.  If your balcony is small and dingy looking with limited floor space, then a few hanging baskets or long planters along the balcony rail can brighten it up, but for both the large or small balcony, choose appropriately for the sun or shade.

If your balcony is tiled, along with the furniture and plants, it can be quite stunning, but if you have concrete floors then an outdoor rug which comes in a variety of colours and are not expensive can make the area feel quite inviting.

If there is an electrical outlet, then adding some subtle lights in between the plants can create a nice effect and allow you to enjoy your balcony garden late into the evening. If there is no electric point, then some decorative outdoor lanterns can be very effective. A bit of bamboo against a brick or stone wall can work wonders, transforming the look of the balcony. A water feature can be very pleasing, making your balcony a little oasis. A finishing touch could be a small barbecue allowing the balcony to become a place for social gathering with family and friends.
