PHUKET – April 1,2014; Speaking in an effort to raise awareness of the problem, one of the victims said that money had been taken from his account via ATMs in Russia, while he was in Phuket. He lost B400,000 to the scammers.

Sun Haohao, 34, said he came to Phuket to study Thai language.

“I went to withdraw some money from the Siam Commercial Bank ATM at the Premium Outlet on the bypass road.

“Later, my bank, the Industrial Commercial Bank of China, alerted me to say that all my money had been withdrawn in a series of transactions in Russia between March 22 and 24.”

He was in Phuket at the time so he blocked the account from further activity but B400,000 had already been taken.

“I want to warn tourists and others that there is a skimmer gang at work in Phuket, using technology to steal information from ATM cards without the owners knowing. I believe my card was hacked at the ATM at Premium Outlet.

“There were a lot of people using this ATM. Three other Chinese people had their accounts hacked and more than B1 million was taken from their accounts in this period via ATMs abroad.

“I need help from the relevant officials to bring the thieves to justice.”
